What is Lock Bumping?
Lock Bumping is a bypass technique used to quickly open pin tumbler
locks with a simple key that can easily be purchased from the internet or
made.
Pin Tumbler Locks account for more than 90 % of all locks on the
market today.
Who can bump open a lock?
With a little practice anyone of any age can bump open a lock.
Written tutorials and video tutorials are all over the internet and
available to anyone with an internet connection. (Including Burglars)
Bump Resistant Locks vs. Bump Proof Locks
A Bump Resistant lock is more difficult to bump, yet it
can still be done with practice and knowledge of the lock.
A Bump Proof lock is a lock that can not be bumped.
Several focus groups around the world are contacted by manufacturers
to test the security of a lock. These groups are made up of locksmiths,
hobbyist, break in artists, and the like. Thanks to these groups
manufacturers continue to improve on the quality of their locks.
Insurance Claim Information
One of the biggest concerns that go along with lock bumping is the
reaction you will get from your insurance. If done properly lock bumping
can not be traced. Even when it is done improperly there is no sign of
forced entry to the untrained eye.
Many insurance companies are denying claims due to the fact that
there is no signs of forced entry. So not only do you lose everything in
your home that is valuable to you, but you don't get compensated for your
loss.
Special Information:
Just because a lock costs more doesn't mean that you are any less
vulnerable to the threat of lock bumping. BEWARE of companies that claim
to advertise drill proof or bump proof locks.
Here is the official chart that shows which locks can easily be bumped, bump
resistant, or bump proof.

* Bump Resistant locks are more difficult to bypass. However, since
someone has managed to bump them open, they can not legally be classified
as a bump proof lock.
** The Master Lock with bump stop is bump proof but only when you are
home, and only if you remember to pull the latch. It does you no good if
you are out or you forget to set the lock.
*** The Kwikset SmartKey is indeed a bump proof lock, however it can
still be picked using conventional methods and is one of the less secure
locks we have ever come across. We do not recommend the purchase of a
Kwikset SmartKey lock.
